Jazz, Pop, Classical, Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra
Advanced
This is a symphonic work written for combined full orchestra and
a big band (see the full instrumentation listing here).
With a playing time of about 15 minutes, A New Day explores many
styles, themes, and moods - tips of the hat to cinematic music with
modern jazz musings, world percussion jams, swing, chaos, a sax
featurette, vibraphone solos and doublings, featured tenor sax and
electric bass solos, along with numerous smaller solos and features
for winds, strings, brass and even some vocal doublings.
A New Day was composed especially for the Corvallis-Oregon State University Symphony
Orchestra and the Max Planck Gymnasium Big Band (from Germany)
and premiered May 19, 2009 in Corvallis to an enthusiastic
ovation. This piece is ideally suited for any talented
orchestra wishing to feature and collaborate with a big band/jazz
ensemble.
A New Day is recommended for professional
orchestras and/or talented college
orchestras, however, advanced youth orchestras with strong
winds and brass will likely be very successful with this
piece. A New Day will fit well with either a 'pops' style
program or a more classical program.
