Solid State

Track Cover Art for Solid State

Solid State is about a machine entity that becomes self-aware. Obviously, this is nothing new but it's the first time I've ever written a song about this topic and it was interesting to explore.

My version takes a sentimental view of the protagonist. Are they misunderstood? Do they truly feel lonely or disconnected? Or is this "object" truly human and in need of things that all humans need? I'm still not educated enough on AI to know for sure if this is possible. Will a human consciousness ever be transferred to what today we might call an inanimate object? I don't know, but I wrote a song about it!

Lyrics

Solid State words and music by Rob Birdwell

clean lines
functional in every place
a vision system that can see...
into outer space

impervious to the elements
or so it would seem
this object has capacity...
to think and dream

and there’s more than this to me
more than meets the naked eye
yes there’s more than this to me
so much more inside...

solid state
but when you shake me I break
so be careful with my heart
that’s a delicate part
solid state
but when I’m lonely I ache
and I long for true connection...
to you…

smooth planes
gather up my interface
by all appearance I am static without...
your embrace

logical and sharp
through every reasoning
with a touch of mystic cybernetic...
super glow

and there’s more than this to me
more than meets the naked eye
yes there’s more than this to me
so much more inside…

solid state
but when you shake me I break
so be careful with my heart
that’s a delicate part
solid state
but when I’m lonely I ache
and I long for true connection...
to you…

in solid state
you can cast me aside
try to reboot me
though all of my circuits have died
you can always disconnect my power supply
pure energy transducers
keep the dream alive...

and there’s more than this to me
more than meets the naked eye
yes there’s more than this to me
so much more inside...
